All to often people think the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival in Leavenworth is the first holiday celebration of the winter. It’s not, remember the Chriskrindlmart weekend celebration?

This year Chriskrindlmart is November 28th. This is actually a very busy and enjoyable festival weekend. Chriskrindlmart starts off the winter holiday celebrations.

As many of you know, Featherwinds Lodging in Leavenworth Upper Valley does Day Weddings, receptions, and Destination Weddings. All tours and meetings are by appointment only. We do this so that you are able to meet with our wedding coordinators, planners and event coordinators to answer all your questions and to view our facility. Appointments are made via email and phone.

We are currently working on a Wedding Meeting Form that you can fill out online and then submit. The form will be short but ask for basic information, guest count, wedding date, bride and grooms name, etc. This will help us be able to assist and guide you through the planning stages and incorporate Featherwinds capabilities with your dreams and desires.

As previously state, the Wedding Meeting Form will be short on required information but will also allow you to submit as much additional information you wish. If you have particular questions you can add them in the comment section. Your questions will be answered in an email confirming your appointment time and date.

Here in the Leavenworth Upper Valley, summertime is not the busiest time of the year, although summertime is busy, it’s just not the busiest time for us. Generally, winter is a very busy time of year for us.

There is still some available weekends and weekdays for our cabins and lodges for this winter. Here at Featherwinds you can drive a short distance to Leavenworth or a short distance on Highway 2 to get to Stevens Pass Resort. Skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing are all available at Stevens Pass.

There is always a lot to do in the Leavenworth Upper Valley and the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth

During December through January, there are many festivals and special events to enjoy in Leavenworth.Chriskindlmart, Holiday Concerts, Christmas Tree Lighting, Christmas Bazaars, Music Festival, Ice Fest and of course Hog Loppet the 30k high country ski “run”.

The Upper Valley has something to offer no matter what season you prefer.  You can hike the many trials and forest service roads, horseback ride, fishing snow shoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, sleigh rides and more.  The Leavenworth Upper Valley provides opportunity for activities in all seasons.

Leavenworth, WA annual Christmas Lighting Festival is the first three weekends in December. On Dec. 4th-6th, 11th-13th, and 18th-20th the Bavarian town will be lit up for the holiday season. This annual festival is not only known nationally but also known worldwide and is one of Leavenworth’s largest festivals.

This Bavarian town comes to life with traditional street corner vendors selling roasted nuts, hot pretzels and German sausages. The holiday spirit continues with street carolers and holiday concerts featuring local talent from “Leavenworth Village Voices” choir.

Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the Bavarian style holiday celebration. Add a unique traditional sleigh ride through the town to make your visit complete.

The Leavenworth Upper Valley is now getting fall weather; cold mornings, sometimes below freezing but daytime highs are still getting up around 65 degrees. There is still time to get in a few more hiking trips before the snow flies. The Leavenworth Upper Valley is home to some of the best hiking trails and scenery in the state of Washington.

With cool mornings and warm afternoons a day hike into the foothills of the Cascades would be spectacular. The scenery, birds and wild life, the great outdoors is at your finger tips. Most of the trails are still open and in great condition. The local Range Station is open on Friday and Saturday to get updated maps and information.

Reaching a ridge top and looking down at the valley is a sight to behold. With little to no clouds in the sky, you can see for miles and miles. The lush green valley floor, deep dark green trees speckled with red, orange and yellow fall colors, it’s a piece of heaven on earth.

If you’re not into hiking, try horseback riding. Local outfitters offer trail rides for groups of all sizes and experience levels. Scenic riding trails are available so be sure to bring your camera! You may get that perfect picture of an eagle or hawk flying overhead, deer or elk grazing, coyote or fox off in the distance, a moose wandering the hillside, or maybe even a bobcat or lynx strolling by, not aware of your presences.

The opportunities are endless in the Upper Valley. Relax and enjoy the world around you. Nature at it’s finest.

Featherwinds Secret Garden is now complete; it is a lovely addition to our wedding grounds. The secret garden, featuring a lush lawn, a water fountain and a wide assortment of rose plants, has already been used by several photographers for wedding photos. Our new garden has quickly become a favorite by our brides and grooms.

Special arrangements are available for private, romantic dinners upon request.

As some of you know we have been working hard on a Secret Garden. The garden entrance is just off of our wedding grounds going into the woods.  The Secret Garden is surrounded by the natural foliage, has lush grass with roses and other flowering plants around the edges. This is a very romantic area for excellent wedding photos, a small wedding or a special dinner (to ask will you marry me?).

Alcohol

Remember, you do not have to serve alcohol at your wedding reception. However, if you decide not to serve alcohol, you may want to get sparkling cider for your traditional toast. On the other hand if you are going to be serving alcohol at your reception, here are a few tips and hints to be cost effective.

Look for a wedding location that allows you to bring in your own alcohol. If you choose to bring in your own alcohol, you will have to purchase a banquet permit from the state. You can purchase your permit at any liquor store for about ten dollars. Taking care of your own alcohol can be a very big money saver.

First, you pick the types and brands of alcohol you prefer. Second, you purchase the quantity of alcohol you want, although it is wise to use the recommendations of the liquor store. Try to stay away from getting kegs. A lot of places don’t allow kegs. Kegs also tend to encourage over consumption of alcohol. Third, you may want to check the “big box stores” for purchasing your beer and wines. Some of the stores allow you to return any unopened cases. You should also ask at your local liquor store about their return police. If you are planning on hard alcohol, bring the garish with you. Garish like lemons, salt and shaker, limes, oranges, etc. The garish is something that is a personal preference and you would have a better idea as to how much garish you need.

Be sure to bring a cutting board and knife. Yes the place you are having your reception at may have those things, but they may not have time to get them when you need them if it is not pre-arranged. Do not assume the place you are holding your wedding/reception at will have all the extras that you should bring. Remember venues have to follow rules and guidelines set in place by the state, county, health department, liquor control board and insurance companies.

Put someone in charge of the alcohol. There is no reason why the bride or groom should have to worry about the drinks. Make sure the person in charge of bringing and removing the alcohol is aware of any rules or regulations the facility and state have. When your allotted time is up, make sure no open containers leave the reception area. Normally this is a rule, but it also helps protect you. If open containers are removed, that person may set the now empty container outside somewhere. You could incur an extra charge for grounds clean up. If one empty container is found; extra staff could be sent out to search all of the grounds for empty containers. This could be very costly. Remember, you are responsible for any damage or extra clean up required after your function. This is normal for any place you book.

The Sound of Music is coming!  Starting July 3rd and running until the end of August, Leavenworth will be hosting a performance of the classic The Sound of Music.  Keeping with the Bavarian mood and feel, Featherwinds will be offering a dinner special on selected weekends.  The special will be a authentic, old fashion Sauerbraten dinner.

Featherwinds will be offering, FREE, a Sauerbraten dinner special, an old family favorite recipe.  This traditional, authentic German dish is sure to enhance your Bavarian experience.  The Sauerbraten dinner special will be available for guests lodged at our B & B style Guest Inn.  Accommodations are limited; there are no rain checks and specials are not available with any other special.
